DESCRIPTION

The French countryside is an area Sally Herriott knows well from childhood summer holidays in Brittany and Normandy. This is from a region much further south, the Auvergne in central France. The harvest is done. The field in the foreground shows cut stubble in ochres, golds, pinks, and mauves, with individual stalks caught in thick impasto marks. Furrows recede toward a treeline in the middle distance. Above it, the morning sky is luminous and warm in cream, peach, and yellow.

The color range in this painting is broad. The stubble field is not simply brown — it contains pinks, purples, and warm whites. The marks are vigorous and confident, and the painting is full of energy despite the subject's stillness. Herriott applies thick, expressive brushstrokes, using impasto to build texture on the canvas.

This painting was made in the in-between time — after the harvest and before the next cycle begins. It is about aftermath: the quiet that follows activity, the landscape returning to itself

.Exhibited in Lumens, Sally Herriott's solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2025 and at the Grünewaldvillan, Saltsjöbaden, 2026.
