DESCRIPTION

A single Monterey cypress stands in the upper left, its dark canopy shaped by the steady wind. Below, large pale granite boulders tumble down the slope. Each one is smooth, rounded, and unique, scattered among low red and green coastal scrub. In the distance, the sea appears as a pale strip.

The sky is soft and quiet, coloured in peach and pink. This is the special tone of a California winter morning, when the air is clear and the light is gentle. There is nothing dramatic - just a beautiful, ordinary January day on the Monterey coast.

This painting, done in oils on a 46.7 × 61 cm cradled board, uses careful, observant brushwork. It is one of the most restrained and tender of the California paintings, with a palette that remains cool and gentle throughout. Once finished and dry, 'Under a Winter's Sky' was cold waxed and buffed to create a soft, satin sheen.

Exhibited in Lumens, Sally Herriott's solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2025, and at the Grünewaldvillan, Saltsjöbaden, 2026.
