DESCRIPTION

The composition presents a long, narrow lane in Gamla Stan, viewed directly, with tall terracotta and ochre buildings converging toward a luminous golden sky in the distance. Several figures walk along the cobblestone streets toward an illuminated building. A couple, engaged in conversation, sits outdoors, taking advantage of the early spring weather. The sunlight begins to warm the environment following an extended winter.

The painting employs a tunnel perspective, with the tall buildings heightening the dramatic effect, while the shadowed streets remain cool despite the sunlight. The composition directs the viewer's gaze toward the illuminated area at the alley's end. The sense of enclosure evokes the historical atmosphere of Gamla Stan through its scale and color palette.

Terracotta Serenade is the second of Sally's works set in Stockholm's Old Town, depicting the seasonal transition as residents begin to emerge and socialize with the retreat of winter. Executed in oil on natural linen canvas and presented in an oak floater frame.

Exhibited in Lumens, Sally Herriott's solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2025, and at the Grünewaldvillan, Saltsjöbaden, 2026.
