DESCRIPTION

The Monterey coastline holds a particular kind of drama. Trees bent by years of Pacific wind. Rock worn smooth by tides that never stop. This painting looks at one of those trees — its solitude, its grip on the cliff, its refusal to move. Its bare, pale branches shaped by the constant spray of salt seem to reach toward the moving waves and sky. Waves hit the dark rocks below. The sea is cold and turquoise, with white foam on the surface.

The sky is painted with urgency, with moving clouds, deep purple near the horizon, and tiny hints of blue showing through. Using oils on board, Herriott employs confident, sweeping brushwork to give the clouds motion and the water energy. The rock surface beneath the tree is warm ochre and pink, reflecting light that stands out against the cold water below.

Sentinel by the Sea was Sally Herriott's first Northern California painting and reflects her love for untamed landscapes. The bleached tree shows resilience, maintaining its sculptural quality despite shallow roots in the cliff face. She aimed to capture the intensity and vitality she felt standing before such wild beauty.
