DESCRIPTION

Painted in 2025, this work depicts a winter morning in Stockholm. The tall vertical spire of Riddarholmen Church emerges from the left side of the canvas, forming the most recognizable silhouette on the city's skyline. Adjacent to it, the blue-green domes of surrounding buildings cluster at a lower elevation. The snow-covered street below appears empty except for a solitary figure in a dark coat and hat, crossing the middle ground. Two additional figures are discernible further in the background.

Bare winter branches extend across the upper right, their fine lines appearing delicate against the pale grey-blue sky. The palette consists of cool blues, greys, and muted ochres, imparting a sense of quiet restraint. Herriott's loose, visible brushwork and use of soft, naturalistic color demonstrate the influence of impressionism.

The title evokes the sensation of a city exhaling the cold. Although set in February, the faint sun suggests the approach of winter's end. This work represents the most atmospheric of Herriott's urban paintings to date.

Exhibited in Lumens, Sally Herriott's solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2025, and at the Grünewaldvillan, Saltsjöbaden, 2026.
