The rauk fields of Gotland's coast are unlike anywhere else in the world. These ancient limestone stacks formed over hundreds of millions of years emerge from the shoreline in clusters, casting long shadows across pale rock and shallow water. This painting takes a wider view than the other Gotland works, pulling back to show the formations as a field; a community of shapes, rather than a single figure.

One tall rauk stands in the foreground, rising from shallow water, while a field of smaller boulders trails away to the right and into the distance. The
composition is low and wide. The horizon sits just below mid-canvas, giving equal weight to the extraordinary sky above and the still, glassy water below.
The palette is cool and restrained: the blue-grey of Baltic limestone, the pale
teal of shallow water, and the soft lavender and gold of a cloudy Gotland sky.
The rauk itself is painted with close attention, its surface texture, the
waterline at its base, the yellow-green lichen clinging to its upper reaches.

Where Solitary Rauk is dramatic, Rauk Field is contemplative. The formations here are part of a field - a community - and the painting captures the particular quiet of a place that has looked like this for thousands of years.
