The marine layer is a regular feature of life on the Monterey Peninsula, drifting in from the Pacific each morning and typically dissipating by midday. This persistent phenomenon shapes the quality of light in ways that continually intrigue me as a painter. Each day presents a unique interplay of haze and sunlight, and this unpredictability compels me to return to my easel.

A single Monterey cypress stands in the middle distance, its twisted trunk pale against the misty forest behind it. The soft marine mist brings the tree forward, adding depth and atmosphere to the painting. In the foreground, loose shapes suggest wildflowers in deep purples, reds, and greens, spreading across the lower part of the canvas among granite boulders. The light is gentle and diffused.

To achieve the soft, ethereal quality of the fog, the artist applied numerous thin, translucent layers of paint to the sky and distant trees, blending cool greys, blues, and purples throughout the composition. As one moves toward the foreground, the forms and colors become more pronounced. Consistent with many of Herriott's works, the final painting was executed on a red ground, which remains visible in the foreground.

Exhibited in Lumens, Sally Herriott's solo exhibition in Stockholm in 2025, and at the Grünewaldvillan, Saltsjöbaden, 2026.
